Every Great Adventure Begins with a Story

The story behind The Wandering Book Nook—and the dream of bringing thoughtfully curated books and a love of reading to our communities.

How It All Began

One afternoon, while enjoying ice cream in my small hometown, I realized something was missing. There wasn't a single independent bookstore nearby. Although the nearest bookstores were only about twenty minutes away, I couldn't help imagining something different—a bookstore that didn't wait for readers to come to it, but instead traveled into the heart of local communities.

That idea became The Wandering Book Nook: a place where every reader is welcome, every story matters, and books can find people wherever they are.

Supporting Local Creators

At The Wandering Book Nook, we believe great stories don't end with the pages of a book. They're also found in the work of local artists, makers, and small businesses.

As we continue to grow, one of our goals is to feature thoughtfully selected books by local authors, bookish gifts, artwork, and handcrafted items created by talented local creators throughout Michigan. We hope our little bookstore can become a place where readers discover not only their next favorite book, but also the incredible creativity within our own communities.

If you're a local author, artist, or maker whose work complements our cozy, book-loving vibe, we'd love to hear from you. Building meaningful community connections is one of our favorite parts of this journey.

What We Believe

Books have the power to connect us—to ourselves, to one another, and to our communities. These values guide everything we do at The Wandering Book Nook.

Every reader deserves the chance to discover a story that stays with them. That's why we thoughtfully curate our collection with books for readers of all ages, interests, backgrounds, and lived experiences.

Every Story Matters

We believe the best bookstores are welcoming spaces where everyone can browse comfortably, discover something new, share favorite reads, and enjoy talking about books. Whether you're a lifelong reader or just beginning your reading journey, there's a place for you here.

Everyone Belongs

As The Wandering Book Nook continues to grow, so does our commitment to making books more accessible. We hope to build community partnerships, collect donated books, and share the joy of reading with readers who have fewer opportunities to discover it.

Growing Access

What's on the Shelves?

At The Wandering Book Nook, you'll find a thoughtfully curated collection of new and preloved books, bookish gifts, and our popular Blind Date with a Book bundles.

Every event we attend has its own unique personality, so we love creating a special collection inspired by that event. Whether we're celebrating Pride, welcoming autumn, highlighting local authors, embracing a colorful craft show, or simply matching the spirit of the community, you'll always discover a themed selection alongside our year-round favorites.

Our goal is simple: to help every reader find a story they'll love, whether it's a brand-new release, a preloved treasure waiting for its next home, or a surprise hidden inside one of our Blind Date with a Book packages.

No two visits to The Wandering Book Nook are ever quite the same.

Our Blind Date with a Book bundles are thoughtfully hand-crafted and paired with a variety of bookish surprises. Whether you're treating yourself or shopping for the book lover in your life, there's a mystery waiting to be unwrapped. Prices range from $10–$25.

Meet Your Bookseller

Hi! I'm Melissa, the owner and bookseller behind The Wandering Book Nook.

By day, I'm a Michigan attorney. But whenever I'm not practicing law, you'll usually find me with a book in hand, curating new books for the shelves, planning our next market, or dreaming up new ways to connect readers with stories they'll love.

My wife, who is a full-time firefighter, and I share our home with two wonderful dogs, Ellie Mae and Odie, a handful of sweet cats, and a flock of chickens that keep us laughing and busy. We love spending our free time camping, hiking, stand-up paddleboarding, and making memories with family and friends.

I'm a bit of an eclectic reader, but you'll most often find me reaching for historical fiction, general fiction, cozy mysteries, psychological thrillers, and LGBTQ+ fiction—especially sapphic romance. Some of my favorite authors include Fredrik Backman, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Kristin Hannah, Jodi Picoult, Elizabeth Luly, Katia Rose, and Rachel Reid.

I believe independent bookstores are an essential part of our communities. They introduce readers to new voices, celebrate diverse stories, and help ensure that readers always have access to a wide range of ideas and perspectives. I'm especially passionate about banned books and protecting the freedom to read because everyone deserves the chance to discover the stories that speak to them.

One of my favorite parts of running The Wandering Book Nook is getting to know fellow readers. Whether you're looking for your next favorite book, hoping for a recommendation, or simply want to talk books for a while, I hope you'll stop by and say hello. I'd love to meet you.
